SOME TIPS FOR PARENTS
Understanding that each individual sees the world in different ways helps us to examine our own perceptions of what parenting is all about. The tips I am offering emanate from a presentation to parents on how to a understand the dynamics of differing points of view that often lead to conflict and may assist us in dealing more effectively with our children in all types of situations.
Helping to Develop a Sense of Responsibility
Ways to help us raise and educate children so that
they will be able to make responsible decisions.
- Believe that “Children are responsible for their own behaviours.”
- Give them lots of practice.
- Let them face their responsibilities.
- Be non-judgmental.
- Allow for natural consequences.
- Know the difference between ‘natural consequences’ and
‘punishment’ - The more they are responsible for their behaviour, the better
they’ll be at accepting responsibility. - Help them be aware all the time that they are deciding what to do.
- Outline alternatives making sure everyone can live with them.
- Avoid rewards and punishments and understand that “why” often
results in making excuses. - Follow through on what the child chooses.
- Be consistent and clear.
- Let them face their responsibilities.
- Discuss the future.
Two Key Questions
1. Is this (name the behaviour) helping or hurting our relationship?
2. Is this (name the behaviour) bringing us together or pulling us
apart?
